Lisbon
Lisbon rewards the unhurried. The good places do not announce themselves. They sit behind unmarked doors in Madragoa, up the hill in Graça, in the converted warehouses out east. I have kept this guide deliberately short, fourteen places, in the order the city tends to reveal them. None are here because anyone paid. All are here because a curator I trust has been recently, and would go back.
Casa Reixa
A plant-filled back room where the matcha is whisked properly and no one rushes you.
Bar Tejo
A short, Portuguese natural-wine list chosen by someone who actually drinks it, and yes, open Mondays.
Travessa do Sal
A neighbourhood dining room the locals guard quietly, the right kind of place for a second date.
Poente Roasters
Proper espresso and quiet tables five minutes from Marquês de Pombal, built for a 9am that matters.
A Estufa
A glass winter-garden café beside the Estrela gardens, light, wifi, and the good kind of silence.
Senhora do Monte
Six rooms above the city, with the quietest terrace in Graça.
Bar Quartinho
A small panelled hotel bar in Chiado where the music never wins over the conversation.
Armazém Sul
A converted warehouse cellar pouring the bottles the city's sommeliers drink off-duty.
